Zuckenstein Keep
The late Gothic keep of Zuckenstein (Cuknštejn) stands on a hill above the Stropnice River at the end of the "Terčino údolí" valley, southwest of Nové Hrady. It is one of the best preserved yeoman's seats to be found in Bohemia. It has remained largely in its original state, being a rare example of the transitional link between a yeoman's fastness and a castle. The keep has an octagonal tower, square courtyard and access balconies with arcades.
First records date back to 1491, but according to archaeological findings, the keep is even older. During the Thirty-Year War, the keep's owner was killed, and the keep was taken, looted and ravaged by the imperial army. A year later, Emperor Ferdinand II gave it to the imperial general Karl Bonaventura Graf von Buquoy as a part of the Nové Hrady estates. The keep is now in private hands, and the new owner is carrying out a gradual renovation which has yielded new archaeological findings.
