Visiting Nové Hrady
The city of Nové Hrady is located 35 km to the southeast from the regional centre České Budějovice, near to the Austrian border. Until the 1980s, the inhabitants of Nové Hrady were restricted by the strict rules which applied in border areas. Most people worked in agriculture, forestry or fishing. After the borders opened in 1989 and new relations were formed with Austria, the Nové Hrady region discovered new possibilities for its economical and social existence.
The region of the Nové Hrady mountains is currently a tourist destination with preserved nature and slowly evolving tourism services. The city of Nové Hrady is an ideal starting point for discovering the surrounding regions.
On a relatively small area, you will find several significant historical and cultural landmarks including the castle, chateau, church and monastery, tomb, blacksmith shop, tannery, city hall, residence, city gate and remnants of the fortifications, Baroque pharmacy, romantic buildings in the “Terčino údolí” nature park, chapels, historical buildings, city square with fountain and chateau park.
In he course of the year and especially during the summer tourist season, many cultural events, sports and club activities take place in the city and its surroundings. Thanks to projects realized by schools, civil groups, institutions, the Academic and University Centre, celebrities and volunteers, Nové Hrady has been transformed from a restricted border town to an attractive place for life and enjoyment.
